Last June, the Koronin Gallery was delighted to welcome to its virtual galleries Elara Schnider, an illustrator from Weil am Rhein, in Baden-Württemberg.
A discreet artist with a profoundly generous outlook, Elara moves with remarkable ease between tradition and modernity. Her studio is a place of bridges: paper, paintbrushes and an easel sit side by side in perfect harmony with a graphics tablet.
The beginning of a bond
A bond developed naturally between the artist and the gallery, through a series of telephone conversations characterised by humility and a willingness to listen: ‘Do you accept my art? Does it speak to you?’
At the Koronin Gallery, the answer was obvious. Elara’s approach is based on a delicate exploration of visual art:
“First I draw my sketches, then I paint them. Finally, I often go back and touch them up using my graphics tablet. This gives them that illustrative feel that I love to see on old posters or high-quality condiment tins.”
Images like walks
A passionate collector of vintage sugar and biscuit tins, Elara draws a gentle, warm sense of nostalgia from these everyday objects. For her, an illustration is not just something to look at: it must take root within you.
“All these images are worlds we can step into to wander amongst their shapes and colours. If you fancy smelling the scent of the flowers in my bouquets, drying your hands on the tea towels in my scenes of everyday life, or turning the corner of my barn… then go on, come in!”
By blending the texture of traditional painting with the soft, muted finishes of digital art, Elara Schnider presents us with comforting works, in which every detail becomes a moment of calm and poetry.
