Luca Hartmann

Luca Hartmann describes himself as an amateur artist. His greatest pleasure? Setting up his chair, folding table, sketchbook, watercolours and pastels in the heart of the Swiss or Austrian countryside.

Painting far from the hustle and bustle of the world

For him, painting is above all a quest for serenity and independence. Our watercolourist and pastel artist writes: “I keep my distance from the media hype and its predators. Retirement has given me time, and I have made it a place of freedom. I don’t expect any recognition from the cultural authorities. Drawing and painting wash away the noise and grime of the world.”

Conveying the emotion of landscapes in pastels and watercolours?

More than a simple reproduction of reality, his art is a sensitive interpretation of his environment: “I do not paint what the eye sees, but what the landscape evokes in me. Meadows, valleys and haystacks become gestures, impulses and sensations. I have learnt a few basics, but I refuse to imitate or bend my vision to convention.”

His philosophy is evident in each of his works. For him, a haystack should look soft and inviting. A cottage should make you want to knock on its door, because you can sense that behind its walls lies human kindness.
