Artemis Irenäus von Baste: The soul of the gesture and the narrative of authenticity

A Swiss artist and the cows.

Is that normal? Yes!

For visual artists such as Artemis Irenäus von Baste, the motif – whether painted, drawn, sculpted or photographed – is never random: it depends on their personal history. The artist does not choose “the theme that appeals” or the “most marketable” one, but prefers a unique vision that he wants to share with his audience. And for the Swiss, a cow is as much a symbol of identity as a marmot or an ibex!

Beyond academicism: sentimental élan

For visual artist Artemis Irenäus von Baste, there are no exceptions to this natural approach. Even though painting cows may seem uninteresting to some art theorists, the artist primarily follows her emotional impulses. She often fulfils oil painting commissions from her circle of acquaintances, transforming rural scenes into works of rare authenticity.

Like many of her colleagues, she defends art’s ability to create something unique. An original work exists in only one copy: it carries a soul that a mass-produced print can never match.

The original work: an emotional and identity link

Unlike industrial reproduction, a painting is the result of a gesture, a glance and a sensitivity that are unique to the artist. It tells a story. This creates an emotional connection: the depiction of a familiar place, memories of childhood or deep roots.

Ordering an original animal painting means choosing emotions and quality that harmonise with the living space and personality of the client.

Focus on the work: A painting with intimate details (January 2026)

In the third oil painting in this series, created in January 2026, one can see, in front of the Brown Swiss cows, subtle clues that reveal the behind-the-scenes of the creation:

  1. The sketchbook by Artemis Irenaeus, placed in the foreground in the centre, symbolises the preparatory work.
  2. The cap and stuffed animal lying on either side of the notebook. These items belong to the artist’s daughter. It is a heartfelt reference to the client who welcomed the Von Baste family to a convivial gathering.

It is fascinating that Artemis Irenaeus refers to the existence of his child in a vivid and aesthetic way for the second time in his work.
Isn’t this painting of cows perhaps a wonderful pretext for talking about family and passing on traditions?
