Ayla Woss
Capturing the fleeting and movement, figurative sculpture
The evidence of an encounter
When sculptor Ayla Woss contacted Natascha to be included in our online gallery, there was no doubt in our minds. The sculptural quality of her work, which focuses mainly on figurative sculptures dedicated to the female form, was obvious to us.
From the stage to the sculptor's studio?
Ayla Woss, a Bavarian native of Austrian descent, has had a unique career: she is a former ballet dancer and retired morphology teacher. Although her CV is impressive in its rigour, the artist herself is reserved. A hard worker, she lets her works speak for themselves. Her past as a dancer is not a glorious chapter, but is evident in every curve, every tension in the earth.
Sculpture as a snapshot?
Capturing momentum and interruption of movement
The central theme of Ayla’s work is movement. Dance, captured in all phases of life, becomes an exploration of the body’s capabilities under her fingers. Her sculptures capture a specific moment, a ‘photographic’ fraction of a second that stimulates the imagination: one senses the momentum that preceded the movement and the suspension that will follow.
« II still dance. For myself. I use spaces – whether indoor spaces such as a studio or outdoor areas such as a garden – and develop movements there: arabesques… These physical sensations guide my hands when they grasp the modelling clay.. » — Ayla Woss
Balance and risk
For Ayla, the creation of figurative sculptures begins with sketches in which the line of balance is pushed to the extreme.
She confides that dancing means flirting with the breaking point and accepting the fall in order to learn better. Transferring this movement into the material is a dangerous exercise, a constant risk that can be felt in the tension of her bronzes.
The search for the essential
Carpe Diem: figurative sculpture as an ode to life
Ayla Woss prefers rarity over abundance. Each work is a quest for absolute mastery, from the first sketch to the collaboration with the artistic blacksmith. More than just a production, she provides us with an intimate narrative. Through the power of her silhouettes, she reminds us of the philosophy that was so dear to Professor John Keating (Dead Poets Society): Man lives only by his passions. Carpe Diem.
